Advanced First Aid

Advanced First Aid is a three-day course of six separate modules extending on the knowledge and skills involved in the Provide First Aid course:

  • Provide Advanced First Aid

  • Provide Advanced Resuscitation

  • Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

  • Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

  • Provide First Aid

  • Automated External Defibrillation

Note that Advanced First Aid no longer contains the Administration of Analgesic Gases competency as it did earlier.

The Advanced First Aid module explores the following subjects in greater detail:

  • trauma management

  • lifting and moving a casualty

  • first aid records

  • multiple injuries

  • multiple casualties (triage)

  • first aid team work

  • drug and alcohol abuse, and

  • treating emotionally disturbed casualties.

For further information, see the First Aid Classes page.

With success at the Advanced First Aid course, the candidate gains the Advanced First Aid qualification and renews the Provide First Aid qualification, both for three years, and gains qualifications in the Advanced Resuscitation components, each valid for one year.

Prerequisites:

None.

A current Provide First Aid ('HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid') or higher qualification less than six months old may be grounds for exemption from the first day.

Advanced Resuscitation

Advanced Resuscitation has two components:

Advanced Resuscitation

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation is taken to an advanced level, involving the use of various masks to reduce the possibility of infection, and air bags, two-person CPR and oxygen delivery apparatus to enable CPR to be performed more effectively and for longer.

Automatic External Defibrillation

How to use a defibrillator, the last 'D' of the St John 'DRSABCD Action Plan', a most important step in the Chain of Survival of a casualty with respiratory collapse.

Pain Management

Pain Management is a more comprehensive course replacing Analgesic Gas Administration, and is a stand-alone course separate from Advanced First Aid and Advanced Resuscitation.
