First Aid Course Changes

The Provide First Aid two-day course previously scheduled for Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February 2016 has been rescheduled to Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February. The lists on the 'First Aid Classes' page reflect this change.

St John has reviewed its 'fees' for 2016, with a small increase for some courses.

Scouting's old A1 form is now an E1 form!

From 1 August, Scouts NSW "A" (for Activity) forms have been relabelled "E" forms. So links and references to the old A1 (Activity Notification) Form have been changed to refer to the E1 form.

'Closing Dates' moved to two weeks prior to each course

With the change in administrative arrangements and St John managing our bookings, there are now less interactions required in the booking process, so we have moved the 'closing dates' for our courses to just two weeks prior to each course. (They used to be three weeks prior.) The new 'closing dates' are shown on each of the course-specific pages and in the downloadable course list available from our First Aid Classes page.

Administrative Changes

The First Aid Team has been operating as the Scout Training Area of St John Ambulance Australia (NSW). Our parent entity, St John, has decided to take over the administration of all its Volunteer Training Areas, including ours. This will mean that St John will be taking the bookings for our courses and accepting the course fee payments. St John's policy is that bookings won't be entered until the fees have been fully paid.

We have sent all the information to St John that St John needs to handle the bookings, and further contact relating to the courses will come from St John. If you have not yet sent your booking, call St John at one of the St John telephone numbers shown at the bottom left of any of the pages of this web site, and ask for the person handling Scout bookings. St John will be taking bookings by telephone in business hours, not by posted forms.

Notwithstanding all this upheaval, our courses will nevertheless continue to be taught by our Scout Trainers, and once at the course your experience will be the same capable and friendly interaction you have enjoyed in the past. The 'Scout Training Area' will cease to exist, but we will continue as 'Scouts NSW Division' of St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) Event Health Services.

Changes to Apply First Aid

Apply First Aid has been superseded by Provide First Aid. This is a National development. The greatest effect will be seen in the Apply First Aid AP1 one day classes, which will become Provide First Aid one day assessment-only classes, with no actual teaching being involved. Success at the Provide First Aid one day assessment-only classes will depend on satisfactorily completing a work book or online training before the class. We will provide more information as it becomes available from St John.

Scout First Aid Badge

Scout First Aid Badge logo

After considering the requirements as they are now, we consider that the Scout First Aid Badge can be worn by Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders qualified in Emergency Life Support, as well as those qualified in Apply First Aid, Provide First Aid, Remote Area First Aid, Advanced First Aid or Occupational First Aid. This appears to be consistent with the prescriptions of Scouting literature and the Australian Resuscitation Council.

For more information, see our First Aid Classes page.

Please book early - preferably before Christmas - for:

  • the Remote Area First Aid course in January,

  • the Advanced First Aid and Advanced Life Support courses in February,

  • the Provide First Aid PR1 course in February, and

  • the Emergency Life Support course (especially for Scouts and Guides) in early March.

All have closing dates very early in the year, which may catch some by surprise.

Course fees by electronic funds transfer!

We have been experimenting with electronic funds transfer for a while, and this option for paying your course fees is now available generally. The details are shown on our Fees page.

Course fees are changing!

St John Ambulance has altered course fees for 2012. Some fees have increased while others have decreased. Broadly, fees for adults in Scouting have reduced slightly, and youth member fees have been made equal with adult fees. The changes will be attractive for many of our customers. We will apply the new course fees from 1 July 2012 only to new bookings.

Please see our Fees page for the details.

Tuesday 6 December 2011

The former 'Senior First Aid' courses have been renamed 'Apply First Aid' courses on this web site. This implements the change by St John Ambulance which I spoke of a week ago.

'Apply First Aid AP1' or 'Apply First Aid - One Day' is the equivalent of the 'Senior First Aid Recertification' course, and is intended for those with First Aid skills, through having qualified in First Aid before, or otherwise.

Existing bookings for 'Senior First Aid' courses have been transferred to the equivalent 'Apply First Aid' courses. No further action is required from candidates. The usual enrolment emails with further details will be sent about two or three weeks before each course.

If you have saved references to our Senior First Aid pages in your browser, please update to the replacement Apply First Aid references. For a while, those seeking the old Senior First Aid pages will be redirected to the replacement pages.

Tuesday 29 November 2011

St John Ambulance has decided to rename its one-day and two-day 'Senior First Aid' courses to 'Apply First Aid' courses. For some time the National competency has been described 'HLTFA301C - Apply First Aid'.

Celebration! The Scouts' First Aid Team's web site is back on the air with improved functionality. Not very much is obvious, but we expect you will find it easier to navigate, and further leaps forward are now possible.

Friday 1 July 2011

If you are late with an application and the closing date is fast approaching or has passed, send the Bookings Secretary an email (to the address at the bottom left of this page) to say you wish to book for a course. Sometimes late applications beyond the closing date can still be accepted, so it is worth enquiring.

St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) has introduced some minor changes to resuscitation guidelines designed to further help people remember how to perform resuscitation in an emergency situation. (Note: Clicking on the link opens a PDF file in a new window, download 872kB.)

On Saturday 27 November 2010, the Australian Resuscitation Council endorsed two changes to resuscitation based on recommendations by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) following a recent review of the medical literature on resuscitation.

The first change emphasises the importance of calling an ambulance as soon as you are aware that you have a person who is not responding. The second emphasises the importance of starting resuscitation with performing chest compressions. Both changes help to make it easier for people to remember what they need to do in an emergency.

The changes will be implemented in St John Ambulance Australia First Aid courses from 1 January 2011.

Monday 1 November 2010 (revised 26 January 2013):

The schedule of First Aid courses is here. Look in the pages associated with each of the course types for details.

The Advanced First Aid course is back in the Scouts' First Aid Team's repertoire. There&3039;s a course in February and could be another in May – June subject to demand. Please see the Advanced First Aid page for details.

We are offering Emergency Life Support courses to Scouts and Guides. Please see the Emergency Life Support page for details.

We have more attractive fee arrangements for those who are already qualified in Apply First Aid or Provide First Aid at a St John course (such as one of ours) and wish to extend their knowledge and skills with Remote Area First Aid, and for others as yet unqualified in First Aid who attend our Provide First Aid and Remote Area First Aid courses in quick succession. See the Fees page.

We have an Provide First Aid partially by e-Learning. This will be for those with some First Aid knowledge but without necessarily having a current Apply or Provide (or Senior) First Aid qualification to achieve Provide First Aid by private study and a one-day assessment session. Please see the Provide First Aid - One Day page for details. We will still offer the usual two-day full Provide First Aid course with all the material covered in greater depth.

Saturday 19 June 2010

A note about our Booking Procedure:

As shown on our Bookings page, booking for a class involves sending a completed Booking Form AND paying the fee for the class. Many of our classes are so popular that more people express their interest than we can accommodate in one class.

In such cases we consider the need for an extra parallel class, but this becomes awkward and stressful when we don't accurately know peoples' intentions two to three weeks prior when we would need to engage Trainers and register the extra class with St John Ambulance.

So please tell us your intentions early. An email is so easy.
