Emergency Life Support

Emergency Life Support is a one day course for anyone from Scouts and Guides more than ten years of age through to adults. It is the first day of the modular Provide First Aid course, and incorporates Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) before lunch and the management of many other first aid emergencies after lunch. There are several assessments: CPR on both adult and infant manikins, wound management, casualty management, and a ten question multiple choice theory paper. The class normally runs from 8:30 am to about 4:30 pm.

For efficient use of our trainers, we often schedule 'Emergency Life Support' and 'Provide First Aid – Two Days' classes together, so that Emergency Life Support candidates attend on the first day only, and Provide First Aid candidates attend on both days. This means that the Emergency Life Support candidates are likely to be in a course with adults doing the Provide First Aid course.

For candidates not yet fourteen years of age, St John requires the completion of a consent form by a parent or guardian approving the teaching of CPR to a person under 14 years. One copy of this consent should be completed by the parent, taken to the course and handed to the trainer.

(Note: Clicking on the 'consent form' link opens a PDF file, size 3kB, in a new window.)

We suggest those over fourteen years of age consider the Provide First Aid class.

With success at the Emergency Life Support class, the candidate gains the National qualification HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support (ELS), valid for three years.

Prerequisites: None.
