Provide First Aid

Provide First Aid is the entry level course for adults and youth over 14. It leads to the nationally approved 'HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid' qualification, valid for three years.

Provide First Aid is available as one day or two day classes. For the one day course, see Provide First Aid — One Day (PR1). The two day option is Provide First Aid — Two Days (PR2) covered on this page.

For a listing of the scope of the Provide First Aid course, see the St John web site.

This two-day course is normally run over a weekend from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm both days, but for those who are not available on Saturdays, there are generally a few classes each year scheduled over two consecutive Sundays, and there is sometimes also a 5 week weekday evening course during May – June, subject to demand. Other options may be available if there is sufficient interest. If you have the numbers of like-minded individuals to make a course viable, please contact us with your proposal.

Entries can possibly be accepted from youth under 14, but please be aware that the subject matter requires some maturity, and demonstrating effective cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult sized manikin requires some strength. Concentration is required, too; the two full days can be very long for some young folk. Please seek further advice from your Scout Leader or Guide Leader, or from the Chairman of the First Aid Team.

For candidates not yet fourteen years of age, St John requires the completion of a consent form by a parent or guardian approving the teaching of CPR to a person under 14 years. One copy of this consent should be completed by the parent, taken to the course and handed to the trainer.

(Note: Clicking on the 'consent form' link opens a PDF file, size 3kB, in a new window.)

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and
Emergency Life Support

As noted on the First Aid Classes page, those interested in gaining a CPR qualification, or just wanting to refresh their skills in CPR, can attend the first quarter of a Provide First Aid course – generally between the start of the course and lunch time in the first day – for the qualification 'HLTAID001 - Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation', or attend the first half – generally the first whole day – of a Provide First Aid course to gain the Emergency Life Support qualification, 'HLTAID002 - Provide Basic Emergency Life Support'. Many teachers require these skills.

From early 2011, the Scouts' First Aid Team has been offering Emergency Life Support classes to Scouts and Guides, who were formerly encouraged to do the Preliminary First Aid (First Aid for Juniors) course. Emergency Life Support offers a superior nationally recognised qualification via a more up-to-date course. See the Emergency Life Support page for further details.
