Remote Area First Aid (PRS)

With Scouting and Guiding having many activities in remote areas, this course is particularly appropriate for members of Venturer-age and over. It covers the extra things to be considered with prolonged care in the bush, where an ambulance will not arrive within a short period of time, if it can reach your location at all.

The 'Remote Area' description should not be taken as limiting its scope. This course covers all those situations where medical help may be delayed. That may include a Venturers' expedition in the Blue Mountains, or simply a walk in Ku-ring-gai Chase.

Remember that Remote Area First Aid covers all those situations where ambulance assistance would be more than 15 or 20 minutes away, and doesn't that include the majority of Scouting and Guiding activities?

For a listing of the scope of the Remote Area First Aid course, see the St John web site.

We are only able to offer the Remote Area First Aid course to members of Scouts Australia and Girl Guides Australia. (See the Member Prices entry on the First Aid Classes page for eligibility.)

SIS-10 Adventurous Activities Remote Area First Aid:

Please be aware that the Remote Area First Aid course we offer does NOT qualify to the SIS-10 Remote Area First Aid required for some Instructors and Examiners in Adventurous Activities.

The Remote Area First Aid qualification we offer complies to the National standard 'HLTAID005 Provide First Aid in Remote Situations, including Alpine, Desert, Marine, Rural/Remote, and Tropical Environments'.

Our understanding is that Guide-level instructors in SIS-10 Adventurous Activities will require just Provide First Aid ('HLTAID003 Provide First Aid' - which we offer) and, optionally, would be well served by additionally having the Remote Area First Aid qualification that we offer.

Only some Instructors and Examiners of higher level Adventurous Activities will require SIS-10 Remote Area First Aid to the National standard 'SISOOPS305A Provide First Aid in Remote Locations'. Most of these will be on the Branch Leader Training Team. Others at Guide level will instruct and assess by delegated authority from these qualified people.

We have asked St John to provide the SIS-10 type Remote Area First Aid, and we may be able to offer this course in the future. When we can, we will announce it here. There are only a small number of providers of SIS-10 Remote Area First Aid Australia-wide.

____________________

St John has reintroduced the 3-day Remote Area First Aid Course leading to both the Remote Area First Aid and the Provide First Aid ('HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid') qualifications.

Prerequisite:

Candidates must have a current Provide First Aid ('HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid') or higher qualification, gained or updated within six months of the final day of the Remote Area First Aid course.

If you have qualified in Provide First Aid at one of our previous classes, we should have a record of your existing qualification, and no further proof will be necessary. If not, please check that your previous qualification is at the required level, and send a photocopy of your certificate with your booking form.

The assessment is at the last meeting of the Remote Area First Aid class, so the previous Provide First Aid qualification should be current until then.
